Public speaking comes naturally to some people, but for others it can be extremely hard. It can be scary when you're in front of lots of people, especially if you dont know them well or at all and are expected to talk. It’s really common to have a fear of speaking in public which is mostly caused by anxiety, and worrying about what others think of you. When you start to feel anxious your body goes into the fight or flight response which can stop you from performing confidently and comfortably. For some people it goes deeper than that when they can even start to develop a fear of fear, where they are worrying about how their anxiety may affect their speaking. I've found talking in front of people hard for a long time. Since elementary school my report cards have all said Quinn needs to speak up more in class. I’ve tried working on it in a number of ways but the thing that helped me the most was acting classes. Acting was something that I never really thought about and was definitely out of my comfort zone. I tried it out last year to challenge myself to do something new and I was really nervous at first. But it was a group of people who were all there to learn something new and it felt safe. I kinda just had to get over my nervousness about it because we had to speak on camera, and pretend to be someone else every week. Overtime I got more comfortable talking in front of people and it was a lot easier to speak to people after that because I just had to be myself. There are many ways to improve your speaking skills, some being things like acting or public speaking classes. With classes like that you know that everyones there for the same reason so it's a safe space to make mistakes and get feedback. We have infinite resources on the internet making it easy to find help. I really liked this ted talk. I found it really helpful how he explained why you're nervous and what you can do to help your anxiety when you're speaking. Public speaking is an important skill and will help you alot in life so it's good to practice it . It can be harder for some people but there's so many sources to improve.

Public speaking is something that a lot of people relate to, and espically struggle with. Reading about your experience with public speaking was pretty inspiring, and it's amazing to hear you are getting better at it. Even if it takes time you will keep trying and that;s admirable.

Dear Quinn, I am impressed how good detailed you´ve written your report. I'd liked that you were so brave and shared your experiences with us. Not everyone can do that. I liked your structure. that you gave a quick overview at the beginning and continued with your own history. And that your report ends with some tips was a really thoughtful decision. So overall a really good job! And a nice headline as well ;)

The link to the ted talk was a simple and an informative way to show more context on how you got advices from others on public speaking. I liked how you mentioned both your own experience and a general situation about the fear of speaking infront of a big group of people so the readers could understand your situation more easily.

Quinn, this was very well said. Speaking in front of an audience is never easy. Even if you work at it, it can still be very difficult. I am happy for you that you started to work on your public speaking by acting. That is a great place to be around people who all want to learn and improve, with no judgement.

A well written blog, providing insight into how challenging it can be sometimes to speak in front of a crowd. I like how you linked a TED Talk in hopes of helping others overcome the same challenge. I can relate on so many levels. Last year, I had to act as a witness in a mock trial for my Law Summative- but I messed up and froze… in front of the entire class. It sucks not being able to do what you want to do sometimes, so I overcame that fear over summer vacation. My trick is to improvise, and honestly, learn not to care what other people think. It may be hard as a teen, but if you care about what others think more than you do, you may end up forgetting what matters to you.

I really agree with you that nobody is born to easily speak in public and I would have never thought about the acting classes even though it makes lots of sense when you explained it. Although those lessons, people and space can begin to be our comfort zone and end up not helping you that much if you don't apply the knowledge in real situations.

as someone who considers themselves pretty extroverted, i definitely still understand that public speaking is something that's nerve racking. i'm glad that you found acting classes to help you become more confident with public speaking.

I found it really comfortable reading your blog because I was dealing with the same issue. I have also seen lots of people with fear of talking in front of a big groups and coming up with ways to go against their fear, but I have never heard of taking acting classes which sound really cool to me.

I can't speak for everyone, but I think most people have a degree of stage fright, so always remember chances are the people you are speaking to know how you feel.
