When I was younger and living in Dubai, I had a few weird experiences with people not treating us right because we were a little different from them but I never really thought about it much because well, I was a child. I moved back and forth from Dubai to Mumbai a few times during those years but I never really noticed much because it wasnt to a high extent. Then we ended up coming to Canada and moving here. The first few months I was here I didn't really get out of the house much and I would just stay indoors and have fun in my little bubble that I had created. I was sad and just missed my family too much but as I went into school and started actually meeting people it was great, amazing even but then I noticed it and as I started going out more it just kept getting worse. I didn't expect to go through something like racism in such an developed and forward country. When I would walk down the street kids would come out of their car windows just to scream dumb things like indian or asian (It was worse than that). This happened to me 4 times in the span of 3 weeks. I was devastated. Not just that but being treated differently even when I would talk to someone. I had people enunciate words to me and speak in a slower tone because they just assumed I couldn’t speak english. One day I sat down with some friends and family and my mom started telling everyone a story about a bus driver who treated her differently because she was brown. Everyone else joined her and we all shared stories about things that have happened to us because we were Indian. It broke my heart to see that so many people were going through the same things I was. I absolutely love the culture that I grew up in. We have so many different types of traditions and practices and I adore them all. I wish for a life of peace and kindness for not just me but everyone. I hope that people accept everyone as time goes by and that we come to a point where everyone is seen as an equal.

I 100% agree with this, I hope we find a time when everyone will be equal. It is disheartening knowing just because of race people are treated differently. I think you spoke a lot of truth in your blog and getting to know you over the past few months you are an amazing person.

Sharing your experiences, especially with your family and people you trust, shows a lot of growth. Reflecting on your story, hearing what your family had to stay must've given you a lot of mixed emotions. Racism is such a serious topic, but with where SDSS is in a small sheltered town it isn't fully acknowledged. Good for you for writing about racism, and what you have experienced.

This is very relateable and it really is heartbreaking to hear about peoples experiences, but I try not to let it get to me. Some people are just cruel because they have things going on, and even though that isn't an excuse, it's a reminder that I shouldn't let what they say ruin my day great blog :)

Racism is still a major issue in most first world countries, and it's good that you bring it up so you can inform us about it. I think it will be a long time until everyone is treated equally because of all the hate in our world, but I hope that we are still around to see it.

Im sad to hear that you have had to experience this, I think we all need to really learn to understand different cultures and fully grasp and accept peoples differences!

I could never imagine someone treating me differently because of the colour of my skin or my traditions, it has never happened to me and I hope it never does. At the end of the day, we are all equal and we deserve the same rights and freedoms, and that is why I believe that racism will fall because of its own weight once our generations become to rule the world.

Thank you for sharing this topic with us. I personally also can't relate to it but I think it is a big problem in our society still and people have to talk about this more often. There is no person in the world that doesn't look different than other people and we should all treat everyone the same.

Nice blog! For whatever reason, I can’t relate, but I know people who have gone through the same thing. The world should be at peace instead of conflict. If you go to Toronto, it’s much more diverse and welcoming!

Thank you Gurleen for sharing your story. Although it probably isn't easy to talk about that topic, you took that step and used this blog to explain the situation of not just you, but so many other people. I am really sad that humans are still fighting against each other, instead of working together. But calling attention to the fact that racism still exists is a important thing! Good job, Gurleen

I cant say I relate to this but thank you for sharing youre experiences with us, that must've been hard. It is sometimes easy to forget racism exsists here still when we live in such small town. It's really sad that we stll have to deal with this problem, especially when its so well known but little has been done agaisnt it.
